We are ready to purchase our first caravan & every time we think we found the right one, we read a review on it & change our minds. In December '07 the D.D. magazine did a review on the Colonial Sydneysider which sounds very good. Is there anybody out there with one & can give us their opinion of the van & the service from the company.

Hi Jay

I can't help you out with info on the Colonial Sydneysider (because I've never heard of it actually) but opinions on the van and company service are just that - opinions, and these can vary greatly from person to person. We're all different, and what I might like, you may not, if you catch my drift. I think if you research several different outlets for the van in question and compare your results, I think you'll come up with an opinion of your own and you can go from there.
One of the biggest questions people need to ask themselves before purchasing a caravan for the first time is, "Do I want the van for bitumen roads or dirt/offroad?"
We wanted a happy medium, so we purchased an 18'6" Ranger Trekka caravan and had a semi-offroad pack fitted. Although we can't take our van on really rough roads, we can travel dirt/gravel roads and bitumen with ease.[

I also must add that although the Ranger Trekka is manufactured and sold in Sydney, it is also available in Queensland from Kedron Caravans in Brisbane.
Our van is very comfortable inside, with a double innerspring bed (storage underneath), mirrored wardrobes, bedside tables and drawers, L shaped dinette (with storage underneath), rear kitchen, sliding pantry, plenty of cupboard space, a full stove (3 burners gas, and 1 electric, with gas griller and oven), a microwave and a 150litre fridge/freezer.
Our van is a tandem model, and it travels and tows very well with Hayman Reese weight distribution bars attached. In the 12 months we have had our van, we have had no breakages; either inside or out.

I hope this all helps.

It also has a shower/toilet combo. Fancy forgetting that!

G'day Jay...

Welcome to the world of caravanning, there are as many opions out there as there are caravanners. Here's mine -

I agree with MJS' comments. There is no best caravan, only what is best for you at the time.

I tend to be a bit wary of the magazine reviews and only take them as just another input to the mix.

I tend to gravitate towards those suppliers with the greatest market share and support systems & then talk to owners who have experienced their products & after sales service. For us the answer in 1999 was Jajco & we have absolutely no reason to regret our choice. Our Daughter has just purchased her first van .. yes another Jayco.

When deciding on a van, consider also the attitudes of the Caravan yard that you are dealing with. It's a bit like car yards. There are some that you would just not consider dealing with, while others have the right & professional attitude to presenting & supporting their product with a quality of service that leads to future business with the customer & their friends.

hope that this helps .. Cheers & good luck .. G
